The Foul Manufacturing Stigma

Let’s start here, whenever we think about manufacturing, what do you imagine? The usual fragment of imagination would be a big giant factory space with stained walls and a large chimney producing thick black smoke polluting the surrounding air. Factories are being run by many sweaty workers who break their backs, working on the machines doing the same thing repeatedly all day.

Well, that’s a terrifying picture to imagine with all those long enduring hours just to bring home a meagre amount. It is prominently known that manufacturing is not an attractive industry AT ALL! If you ask a teenager today, if they would work in the manufacturing industry, I bet they would not even bat an eye on it.

Since then, society has become convinced that the only way to find good-paying, stable employment is by having a four-year college degree, and this has caused jobs in manufacturing to lose their appeal.  A study conducted by Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute found that among 18 to 24-year-olds, manufacturing ranks dead last among industries in which they would choose to start careers —which is a problem for manufacturers who are desperately trying to fill jobs. Malaysians are also in fear of the loss of manufacturing jobs to other nations with lower labor costs and fewer regulations, contributing to the idea that these jobs are unstable and may not be available in the long term.

However, things were different several decades ago. High schools encouraged students to take vocational classes, which they saw as essential for finding jobs after graduation. Today, people often underestimate the importance of practical skills. Learning to do certain jobs well and operate complex machinery can take many years of practice and special training. These machines are usually large and complicated, and you need to be very skilled to use them properly.

Manufacturing has come a long way. While the old image of grimy, backbreaking factory work still sticks in people's minds, today's factories are often much cleaner and more technologically advanced. Many factory jobs now involve running sophisticated machines, not just manual labor. But there's a bit of a disconnect. Malaysia needs skilled workers, research, and engineering, but there's also a strong push for everyone to go to college. This can be confusing because some factory jobs don't require a college degree. Plus, people want to have options beyond factory work. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that factory workers are unskilled and stuck in low-paying jobs. But that's an old-fashioned idea from the days of manual manufacturing.

Today’s manufacturing jobs are far more diverse and demanding than a decade ago. The days of repetitive, monotonous tasks are long gone. Modern manufacturing often involves complex processes that require specialized skills and knowledge. From engineering and design to quality control and data analysis, manufacturing professionals play crucial roles in driving innovation and ensuring product quality. These jobs offer a wide range of opportunities for individuals with a passion for problem-solving, technical expertise, and a desire to contribute to the production of goods that shape our daily lives.
